Why Peppermint Essential Oil Never Stays on My Shelf

Why Peppermint Essential Oil Never Stays on My Shelf

Some people collect shoes.
Some people collect coffee mugs.
Apparently, I collect reasons to use peppermint essential oil.

It's one of the few oils that gets used year-round in our house, but summer is when it really earns its keep. Between road trips, hot Maryland weather, outdoor activities, backyard BBQs, and my tendency to underestimate how much gardening I've actually done, peppermint gets a lot of use around here.

If I had to guess, it's probably one of the most versatile oils in my collection—and definitely one of the most-used.

A Little Peppermint History

Peppermint has been enjoyed for centuries and has a long history of use around the world. It is a hybrid plant created from watermint and spearmint and is known for its fresh, crisp aroma and cooling sensation.

Throughout history, peppermint has been used in everything from teas and culinary recipes to personal care products and household items. Today, you'll find peppermint in toothpaste, gum, candies, beverages, soaps, lotions, and, of course, essential oils.

One sniff and it's easy to understand why it has stood the test of time.

Fresh. Clean. Invigorating.

What's not to love?

Why I Reach for Peppermint All Summer Long

Road Trips and Winding Roads

Every summer includes at least a few road trips. And unfortunately, neither my son nor I were blessed with iron stomachs when it comes to long, winding roads.

Whether we're headed to the beach, exploring a new town, or taking one of those "it'll only take an hour" drives that somehow turns into three, peppermint always comes along for the ride.

A few whiffs of peppermint can make those twisty roads feel a whole lot more manageable, and it's become one of our road trip staples.

Some families pack extra snacks.

We pack peppermint.

Hot Maryland Summers

Can we all agree that Maryland humidity deserves its own personality?

Because walking outside and immediately feeling like you've wrapped yourself in a warm, damp blanket is not exactly my favorite part of summer.

One of my favorite summer tricks is applying a little peppermint to the tips of my ears when the temperatures start climbing. I love the refreshing sensation it provides, especially during outdoor events, ball games, farmers markets, or afternoons spent working in the yard.

When summer decides to show off, peppermint is usually nearby.

The Afternoon Slump

You know the one.
Lunch is over.
Your to-do list is somehow longer than it was this morning.
The kids need something.
The dog needs something.
The laundry is staring at you from across the room.
And somehow it's only 2:30 PM.

The fresh aroma of peppermint is often my go-to when I need a little afternoon reset and a reminder to finish what I started. Or at least finish one thing.

After One Too Many BBQ Favorites

Let's just say summer and moderation don't always travel together.

Between cookouts, family gatherings, vacation treats, and the occasional "I'll just have one more scoop of potato salad," there are times when my stomach reminds me that perhaps my eyes were bigger than my appetite.

Peppermint is one of the first oils I reach for when I've overindulged and am feeling less than my best. Whether it's after a backyard BBQ, a county fair food adventure, or that second helping I definitely didn't need, the fresh aroma of peppermint is always welcome.

No judgment here.

Summer memories are made around food. And sometimes those memories include one too many deviled eggs.

After Walks, Gardening, and Pretending I'm Younger Than I Am

Every spring I convince myself that gardening is relaxing.

Then I spend three hours pulling weeds, hauling mulch, planting flowers, and generally acting like I'm training for the Olympics. The next morning my body likes to remind me that I am, in fact, not twenty anymore.

Peppermint has become one of my favorite oils to include in roller blends and massage oils after long walks, gardening projects, yard work, or those random bursts of motivation where I decide to reorganize an entire flower bed in one afternoon.

Future Me is always grateful when Present Me remembers to grab the peppermint.

In the Diffuser

Peppermint is also one of my favorite oils for diffuser blends. It instantly makes a room feel fresh, clean, and energized.

Some of my favorite summer combinations include:
🍋 Peppermint + Lemon
🍊 Peppermint + Orange
🌿 Peppermint + Lavender
🍈 Peppermint + Lime
☀️ Peppermint + Citrus Fresh

These blends are especially nice during the warmer months when I'm looking for something bright and refreshing.

DIY Projects

If you've followed me for any length of time, you know I love a good DIY.

Peppermint finds its way into all kinds of projects around my house, including:
• Cooling sprays
• Linen sprays
• Room sprays
• Roller blends
• Sugar scrubs
• Homemade cleaning products

A little peppermint can completely transform a recipe and make it feel fresh and invigorating.

The Bottom Line

If I had to choose only a handful of oils to keep on hand, peppermint would absolutely make the list.

It's versatile, affordable, smells amazing, and seems to find a purpose in every season of life.

From road trips and summer heat to gardening adventures and diffuser blends, peppermint has earned a permanent place in my wellness toolkit. And judging by how often I reach for it, I don't see that changing anytime soon.

What's your favorite way to use peppermint?
