6 PRACTICAL WAYS TO MAKE PRACTING GRATITUDE A HABIT

6 PRACTICAL WAYS TO MAKE PRACTING GRATITUDE A HABIT

Embrace a life filled with positivity and peace by incorporating gratitude into your daily routine. Practicing gratitude not only uplifts your spirit but also enhances your overall well-being. Spend some time this month being intentional. Try practicing gratitude every day using some of these simple and practical tasks.

Wouldn't it feel amazing to start every day in a positive mood and ready to take on the world. Instead of mentally replaying life's woes and continuing to put your head in the sand you could chose to take control of your thoughts and focus on the good? Each day you will learn to appreciate life more which leads to feeling happier. Don't knock it 'til you try it. Grab a journal and get writing! Need tips for how to get started? Try these:

*Be specific and detailed. Start with choosing one thing, big or small. Write down what you're thankful and then elaborate with why.

*Give yourself a break. You are not writing a novel to sell. Your words are for you. Just write how you are feeling and let go of grammar worries.

*Start with a prompt. Don't be afraid to get your mind going by searching for thankful prompts. The internet has plenty to choose from.

The power of your mind to manifest from thoughts sounds a bit hokey but until you've tried changing your language you can't imagine how powerful it truly is.

Start with a commitment that you won't complain for one day. Then two, then more. I promise you the less you complain, the more positive you will be. Your language will become encouraging rather than something that pulls you and everyone around you down. Pretty soon you'll have something positive to say even if you're tumbling down the stairs (wink wink) ...

A new study shows that expressing gratitude affects not only the grateful person, but anyone who witnesses it. Researchers studying gratitude have found that being thankful and expressing it to others is good for our health and happiness. Not only does it feel good, it also helps us build trust and closer bonds with the people around us.

Choose a day and say thank you a lot. Thank you when someone holds to door for you. Thank you when someone brings you a coffee. Thank you when a friend calls out of the blue. Thank you when someone hands you a completed work task. Thank you when your kids actually put their shoes where they belong.  Just say thank you. The more you do it, the easier it will become.

Did a co-worker go above and beyond with a project? Tell them how much you appreciate the extra effort. It helps to build strong relationships, foster a sense of teamwork, and motivate people to do their best. When co-workers feel appreciated, they are more likely to be engaged and productive. Productive coworkers equal less stress for you. Imagine your workplace becoming more and more positive simply because you said thank you.

Was a friend recently there for you in an unexpected way that made your day? Tell them how appreciative you are and maybe add in a little "love you lots." It might feel strange to show affection to a friend because unlike romantic relationships, platonic relationships often lack a script for explicit declarations of love but something tells me your friends will be okay with knowing they are valued, especially if you have a friend whose love language is words of affirmation!

Do not fall into the trap of thinking everyone deserves your time and attention. The fastest way to derail your path of becoming more grateful is to allow negativity in your space all the time. The biggest culprit is within the vast space of social media. It is easy for people to air their grievances with little to no repercussions. Social media can be a space full of negative, rude, and combative individuals. That doesn't have to be your story. Do not be afraid to remove, unfollow, or snooze those on social media who tend to bring you down or constantly upset you. Instead, find individuals who post light hearted and positive content and add them to your favorites so you see more of it!

Unfortunately social media isn't the only place negativity exists. It can be anywhere. Are the employees rude where you shop? Does a co-worker use the breakroom as a place to word vomit negative thoughts about anything and everything? Does a family member make every holiday unbearable? Don't be afraid to create boundaries. It may not always be easy but you should consider prioritizing your mental health and creating a space where you can easily flourish and be grateful for all the things you allow into that space. Find a new favorite boutique or coffee shop, it may be even better than where you went before. Eat at your desk and give yourself some quiet time to reflect on things that bring you joy. And family. While it may be a super tricky situation to change, toxic family members do not have a right to sit at your table if they constantly cause discord. Those seats should be reserved for those showing love and harmony. Ultimately you get to decide who gets to share these holiday moments with you.

If you struggle with creating boundaries I highly recommend Good Boundaries and Goodbyes by Lysa TerKeurst or Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud, Dr. John Townsend. You will be setting appropriate boundaries in no time.

Keep calm as often as possible. We know that stress is a part of every day life but if we can take a few steps to calm our minds and push that stress out, we will have the space to concentrate on gratitude practices.

*Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace, and balance that can benefit your emotional well-being and your overall health. You can also use it to relax and cope with stress by focusing on something that calms you. Meditation can help you learn to stay centered and keep inner peace.

*Try Yoga. There are many possible reasons for how yoga may improve mental health and counteract stress. One well-accepted idea is that yoga helps regulate the autonomic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary axis, both of which are stress response systems. Raise your hand if you're ready to try yoga now!

*Diffuse essential oils. Diffusing essential oils like Lavender or Frankincense can promote a sense of relaxation and reduce stress. Lavender is renowned for its soothing properties, aiding in a serene and restful ambiance. Frankincense, on the other hand, offers a grounding aroma that encourages mindfulness and reflection.

For over 8 years I've dug in, learned, made changes and began educating others how beneficial essential oils can be when you add them to your daily routine. Whether you just want to begin diffusing to help your mind become more grounded or you are ready to go all in and ditch the toxins for safer products, I am here to help.

Before we give you the most delightful recipes, meet my top 5 essential oils/blends for the fall. There are so many wonderful scents to choose from but these are my favorites and the ones I use the most all season long :

Thieves Essential Oil Blend

If there was only one oil we could have in our arsenal, it would probably be Thieves. This blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils smells like a warm cup of chai and is a powerhouse when it comes to our health and our homes!

Thieves is THE oil for immune support. We're talking what you want to reach for daily to give your body a little extra boost and definitely what you want to reach for when your defenses start to go down. A quick PubMed search for the individual oils in this blend will have you convinced that these oils can be a powerful tool for our health!

Vanilla Oleoresin

Vanilla is such a warm, inviting and happy oil. It has a luxuriously rich, slightly sweet scent that enhances the experience of virtually every other essential oil, both when used topically or aromatically! Vanilla extract is widely used in baking, perfume manufacturing and even aromatherapy, but many people don't realize the array of health benefits that come from using vanilla oil, even though it is not technically an essential oil. Young Living's Vanilla oleoresin is unique. It has an incredible scent and some wonderful health benefits!

Before we dive into our recipes, I'm sure you're wondering WHY we would bother using essential oils versus candles, plug ins, room sprays, wax melts, and ready made items from the local or box stores and is it worth the money? The main reason, synthetic scents. The rabbit hole is deep and never ending on this topic. Lucky for you I did that dive years ago and never looked back. I couldn't believe the ingredients that are in our store bought items. Cliff notes for oils vs synthetic scents:

Synthetic scents are full of endocrine disruptors which means it jacks up your hormones. Raise your hand if you're interested in yours or your kids hormones being jacked up just to make your home smell cozy? I'm sure you aren't, especially since there is an alternative that isn't just better, it's beneficial! Read more about the perks of diffusing below but simply getting synthetic scents out of all your smellies, laundry, and personal care items will change your life. No joke.

The cost? The cost, especially related to diffusing is much better than you think! A candle from your favorite candle store averages $30 for a 22oz jar with a burn time of 110 hours (that's the BIG jar). Let's break down a few favorite essential oil singles and blends to see how much cheaper it is to diffuse!

Lavender 15ml
$27.25
250 drops
6 drops in a diffuser that runs for 10 hours = 66 cents
You can diffuse that bottle of lavender approximately 40 times
Hours of diffusing = 400

Thieves 15ml
$39.25
250 drops
6 drops in a diffuser that runs for 10 hours = 96 cents
You can diffuse that bottle of thieves approximately 40 times
Hours of diffusing = 400

Pumpkin Spice 10ml
$35
180 drops
6 drops in a diffuser that runs for 10 hours = 1.14 cents
You can diffuse that bottle of pumpkin spice approximately 30 times
Hours of diffusing = 300

There really isn't any good reason to stick with synthetic scents. Read more about the dangers of synthetic scents HERE

Now grab your oils and get ready to make a few things to get your home smelling cozy:

The easy buttons in the fall are Pumpkin Spice and Thieves essential oil blends. They naturally smell like autumn. But what if you want to create your own scents? Try these, you won't be disappointed.

DIFFUSING AT A GLANCE

Makes your space smell amazing
An easy habit for anyone to start at any time
A great alternative to scented candles and wall plugs (which are full of toxins!)
Benefits many needs - mood, respiration, focus, immunity, cleansing, sleep and more
Supports overall health and a low-tox lifestyle

There are three major ways to use essential oils - topically (on the skin), ingesting and aromatically (diffusing, inhaling from the bottle). We often choose the method of diffusing (or inhaling) over topical or ingesting because it is extremely effective for:

  • Emotions
  • Mental Support
  • Respiratory Support
  • Rest & Relaxation
Cliff notes version: Breathing our oils has the potential to make us happier, healthier, and more focused!

STAR SPANGLED SURVIVAL TIPS

STAR SPANGLED SURVIVAL TIPS

The 4th of July is a time for celebration, fireworks, and fun with family and friends. However, the hustle and bustle of the festivities can sometimes feel overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you stay relaxed, energized, and ready to enjoy every moment.

An outdoor space without outdoor pests is a goal for every summer party. If that's a goal you're aiming for, then try any of these tips:

Looking for a natural way to enhance your outdoor experience and keep those pesky insects at bay? Look no further! Citronella essential oil is your perfect outdoor companion. The citronella name is synonymous with insect repellent. Grab a battery powered diffuser and diffuse my favorite Bug Away blend.

***Cut drops in half if diffusing in an indoor space.

This DIY floating candle bowl will transform your everyday backyard party into an enchanting, fragrance-filled bug free event. Make a collection of these bowls and arrange them around the patio, then sit back and enjoy the glow and warm summer scent of Citronella and Lemon.

Supplies

• Glass bowl or container
• Decorations of your choice. You can use anything! (Lemon peels, orange peels, cinnamon sticks, lavender, rosemary, flower petals, river rocks, etc.)
• 20 drops Citronella essential oil
• 10 drops Lemongrass essential oil

• 1 tablespoon witch hazel
• Water to top off glass bowl or container
• 1 unscented floating candle

Instructions

1. Gather decorations and arrange in bowl. We recommend cutting them into two-inch pieces so they don’t bunch at the top of the bowl or cause it to overturn.
2. Add witch hazel, Citronella oil, and Lemongrass essential oil to the bowl.
3. Fill in the remaining bowl space with water.
4. After placing your bowl outside, top it off with the floating candle and light it to create a cozy, aromatic ambiance you and your guests can enjoy throughout the evening.

Young Living's insect repellent is a 100% Plant-Based Formula that is formulated with pure essential oils and natural ingredients, ensuring a gentle solution for your skin while keeping bugs at bay. It is designed with the whole family in mind, is free from DEET and other harmful chemicals which should provide peace of mind for parents and caretakers.

Unlike many synthetic repellents, this blend offers a fresh, invigorating scent that you'll love. Enjoy the benefits of essential oils like Citronella, Tea Tree, and Lemongrass without any overpowering odors. The best part is that just a small amount repellent provides hours of protection. Whether you're camping, hiking, or simply enjoying a backyard barbecue, you can trust it will keep insects away. Read more about YL's Insect Repellent HERE

Feeling the heat?  Whether you're escaping the summer sun or unwinding from a workout, try this cooling spray for the ultimate chill.

Supplies:

Glass Spray Bottle
1 TBSP Witch Hazel
30 drops Peppermint
Distilled Water

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to a 4oz glass spray bottle.  Gently shake before using.  Spritz body as needed for a cooling effect.

If DIY isn't your thing, grab a pre-made cooling spray HERE

Summer nights are perfect for enjoying spectacular fireworks displays! Whether you’re in your backyard or at a big public event, we know you’ll want to make the most of it. As fun as it can be for most of us, sometimes children and pets are frightened. Try these firework prep tips to create a calming atmosphere and an enjoyable night for all.

  • Fill up that diffuser well before dark. Choose a calming oil that your children and pets already love. Then diffuse, diffuse, diffuse.
  • Just before dark, apply a small amount behind the ears (for little ones) and give your pets a nice rub on the ears and belly after rubbing a drop or two in the palms of your hands.
  • Headed to watch the fireworks? Make a roller of calming essential oils and apply before and during the night.

When you stay hydrated, your body functions at its best, from supporting your skin health to aiding in digestion and maintaining energy levels throughout the day. When we are outdoors in the heat we need more hydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water and try this natural electrolyte drink to stay ahead of the game.

Ingredients:

1/4 tsp Himalayan Sea Salt
1/4 tsp Baking Soda
2 Tbsp Sugar in the Raw or Agave (pick a sweetener you feel good about)
1 Qt Water
1 dropper Young Living mineral essence
Splash of Organic Orange Juice (no sugar added) or 2 drops a vitality essential oil of your choice for flavor!
.
Instructions:

Combine the above ingredients and drink as necessary to restore vital minerals and hydration. Vitality Essential Oils can be added instead of juice for flavor or it can be served plain!

4th of July fun often involves the beach, picnics, or backyard BBQ's which all come with lots of sun. Be sure you are prepared for all your sun filled activities using these tips:

If you're old enough to read this blog I don't need to tell you how important it is to wear sunscreen, but you may not know that all sunscreen is not equal. The market is full of sunscreen containing more than questionable ingredients. Grab reef-safe mineral sunscreen and get on with your outdoor activities with the confidence that you are being protected by the safest ingredients available.

Young Living's Mineral Sunscreen is gentle on skin. Free from harsh chemicals, it is perfect for sensitive skin and everyday use. It contains Broad-Spectrum Protection which provides SPF 50 to safeguard your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Its nourishing ingredients include natural moisturizers and essential oils like Helichrysum and Carrot Seed, which hydrate and soothe the skin. Read more about the sunscreen HERE

Sometimes we forget to reapply and sometimes we forget our sunscreen completely resulting in sore, burning skin. If you find yourself red after a day in the sun, try nourishing your skin with an after sun spray that also smells fabulous.

LIFESTYLE TIPS AND PRODUCTS FOR DRY WINTER SKIN

I don't know about you but my skin changes with every season, winter being the worst. It's no wonder our skin suffers in the colder months. Cold air holds less moisture and we don't help matters indoors - the heaters we turn on dry out the inside air as well. When the air around us becomes dry we suffer from itchy, red, flaky skin; cracked cuticles, and even flared eczema. The mildest cases of dry skin are most likely preventable and the in the worst cases adding some extra care in your routine may give you relief from your symptoms.  Check out my best tips and products for dry skin relief:

  • Wearing gloves will help protect your hands from getting chapped and cracked which can be painful. Should you find yourself needing relief from winter cuticles, consider good quality hand lotions like Lavender Hand and Body Lotion. For extreme cases I have used AnimalScents Ointment. Yes, it WAS formulated for animals but it works so well on our skin too! Don't be afraid to try it.
  • Wear lip balm to protect your lips. Be cautious of ingredients such as parabens, petroleum, mineral oil, and artificial pigments. Instead, use a lip balm with moisturizing and healing ingredients such as coconut, almond, rosehip or jojoba oil, beeswax, and that any added flavoring is a natural ingredient like essential oils. Although I prefer Grapefruit Lip Balm, I keep a Lavender Lip Balm handy in the winter in case I get cracks in my lips.

Using the wrong soap - particularly liquid soaps and sanitizers high in alcohol can dry your hands out. Be sure you are using a soap specifically formulated to protect your hands and if you need to use hand sanitizers, that they are made with the proper ingredients.  My choice all winter long is Thieves Foaming Hand Soap and Hand Sanitizer.  The hand sanitizer is made with denatured alcohol from peppermint and is infused with aloe vera making it nourishing to the skin.

Can't find a hand soap you love?, see below and try making your own foaming hand soaps.

While most exfoliation methods are discouraged in the winter months, dry brushing is the exception. Dry brushing exfoliates old skin cells and primes your skin for newer, healthier ones. It can also help to increase circulation and stimulate lymphatic drainage.  Newer skin cells = healthier skin. Dry brushing should be done before you shower. Be sure you are properly moisturizing afterwards to prevent drier skin. My go-to is Cel-lite Magic Massage oil. It smells glorious and has the perfect ingredients to pamper and hydrate your skin.

Believe it or not, taking hot showers can dry out and irritate your skin.  Consider the routine of dry brushing, showering with mild instead of scalding water, followed by a good moisturizer that contains natural ingredients that nourish the skin. Cel-lite Magic Massage Oil and Genesis Hand and Body Lotion are my favorites.

You can't control the weather but you can control your indoor environment.  Consider running humidifiers or diffusers to add moisture to your home. If you are desperate and don't have a humidifier available, boil a pot of water on your stove throughout the day. There are so many humidifier and diffuser options available. If you are considering getting a humidifier that has a tray for essential oils or a diffuser, be sure it has an ultra-sonic plate for proper dispersion of the oils and is made of medical grade plastic. Meet my favorite diffusers here.

Avoiding alcohol, drinking plenty of water, and incorporating healthy fats into our diet all contribute to healthier skin. If you are having trouble getting plain water down, try adding Vitality drops for added flavor and energy/electrolytes.

Keeping a good skincare routine is helpful in every season but during the winter months you may want to consider changing your routine a bit.

  • Cut back on exfoliating your face. Usually 1-2 times a week is recommended but during the drier months I only exfoliate about once every ten days. It makes a big difference.
  • Use a gentle cleanser. Some cleansers have harsh ingredients that dry out your skin. ART Gentle Cleanser is the cleanser I use all year around.
  • Moisturize with the appropriate products. Avoid products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, salicylic acid, and added fragrances regardless of the season but especially in the winter months. Be sure to use extra nourishing products like ART Intensive Moisturizer, ART Renewal Serum, and Essential Beauty Dry Serum that contain natural ingredients with no synthetic fragrances.

If you've never looked into the amount of harmful ingredients that are allowed in our products, I highly encourage the dive down that rabbit hole. It's amazing that so many carcinogens and ingredients that do the opposite of what are advertised is simply the norm.  On your skin means in your bloodstream so check your skin care products (face, hair, body, lip, and makeup) and avoid using any that contain these known toxins:

  • Formaldehyde
  • Parabens
  • Triclosan
  • Petroleum
  • Fragrance
  • Oxybenzone
  • Mineral Oil
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Laureth Sultfate
  • and MANY more - DO YOUR RESEARCH!
